Solar power chargers Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaics convert light into electric current using the photovoltaic effect. PWM Vs MPPT For example: 32V panel @ 7.8A (250Watt) is used to charge a 12V battery. The PVM charger will reduce the voltage to 12V and keep the current at 7.8A (93.75Watts). There is a loss of power. MPPT chargers will reduce the voltage to match the battery, but it will also adjust the current to keep the battery charged - using the maximum use of the power available. For example: 32V panel @ 7.8A (250Watt) is used to charge a 12V battery. The MPPT charger will reduce the voltage to 12V, but will also increase the current to 20.8A (250Watts). The panel can operate at it’s maximum power point, and in turn can generate much more power. What solar panel voltage do I need? For an MPPT controller to work correctly, the voltage of the solar panel (or solar array) must be at least 4V to 5V higher than the battery ‘charging’ voltage (not the nominal battery voltage). This is because the panel voltage will drop under cloudy condition, or when the solar panel temperature increases. In order for the MPPT to function correctly the panel voltage must always be higher than the battery voltage under all conditions. | |||||
