Network LAN Cable Glossary
LAN cables (Ethernet cables without connectors) are widely used in networking installations for homes, offices, data centers, and industrial setups. Below are the most common terms, specifications, and categories explained for easy understanding.
1. Conductor Material
CU (Copper) - 100% pure copper conductor. Best for professional networks, PoE devices, and high-performance data transmission. Low resistance and durable.
CCA (Copper-Clad Aluminium) - Aluminium wire coated with a thin copper layer. Cost-effective for short runs and non-PoE applications. Not recommended for critical installations.
2. Cable Construction
Solid Network Cable / Solid Core - Each conductor is a single solid wire. Ideal for fixed installations in walls, ceilings, and patch panels.
Stranded Network Cable - Each conductor is made of multiple thin strands. Flexible and best for patch cables and areas with frequent movement.
3. Shielding Types
UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) / U/UTP - Standard Ethernet cable with twisted pairs and no additional shielding. Most common for home and office networking.
FTP (Foiled Twisted Pair) / F/UTP - A foil shield surrounds all twisted pairs. Protects against electromagnetic interference.
STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) - General term for shielded cables, using foil, braiding, or both. Used in high-interference areas.
S/FTP (Shielded Foiled Twisted Pair) - Each pair has a foil shield plus an overall braided shield. High-performance for data centers and strong EMI environments.
SF/UTP (Shielded Foiled / Unshielded Twisted Pair) - Overall foil and braided shielding, but no individual pair shielding. Common in industrial environments.
SF/TP (Shielded Foiled / Twisted Pair) - Combines foil and braided shielding with shielding on each twisted pair. Maximum protection for mission-critical networks.
Foil & Braiding - Shielding methods. Foil is lightweight; braiding adds strength. Often combined for robust EMI protection.
4. Special Cable Properties
Twisted Pair - Conductors twisted together in pairs to reduce interference. Basis of Ethernet standards.
Shielded - Any cable with foil or braided protection. Essential for environments with EMI.
UV Protected / STP-UV - Jacket resistant to UV radiation. For outdoor installations, prevents damage from sunlight.
5. Packaging Formats
Drum - Large reels with hundreds of meters of cable. Used in large-scale projects.
Pull-box - Cardboard box with cable for direct pulling. Convenient for medium installations.
Roll - Cable coiled in a roll. Common for shorter lengths and easy handling.
6. Ethernet Categories (CAT Standards)
