Large Format / Wide Format Printers

Wide format printers (also called large format printers) are specialised machines designed to print on media much wider than standard desktop printers. Typically they support roll widths from about 18 inches up to 100 inches. Devices with capacity over 100 inches are often called super-wide or grand format.

Typical Uses & Applications

• Signage, banners, shop facades, trade show graphics and billboards.
• Murals, wallpaper, vehicle wraps and wall graphics.
• Architectural plans, construction drawings, CAD and GIS schematics.
• High-quality posters, fine art prints, photographic enlargements.
• Displays, backlit film, duratrans and exhibition graphics.

Print Technologies & Ink Types

• Aqueous (Water-based) inks (dye or pigment) - generally used indoors or for art/photo work. Dye offers wider colour gamut; pigment ink provides better fade resistance.
• Solvent & Eco-solvent inks - durable, weather-resistant, good for outdoor signage and vinyl.
• UV-curable inks - dry with UV light, can print on rigid substrates (metal, acrylic, wood) and flexible media.
• Dye-sublimation methods for fabric, textile and apparel printing.

Media & Substrate Handling

Wide format printers may use:

• Roll-fed substrates (paper, vinyl, banner materials) for long continuous prints.
• Sheet fed or cut-sheet media for special or rigid materials.
• Flatbed or hybrid printers allowing rigid materials like foam board, metal, wood or acrylic.

Key Features to Check Before Buying

• Print width: Choose width based on maximum media size you need (e.g. 24", 36", 44", 60", 100").
• Ink type and durability: For outdoor or exposed signage, UV or solvent-based inks are better. Indoor photo work can use pigment or aqueous inks.
• Resolution & droplet size: Smaller droplets and higher dpi matter for photographic detail; for large banners, speed and pigment durability may be more important.
• Media handling & finishing: Does the machine support roll holders, automatic cutters, take-up reels, flatbed rigid media? These affect versatility.
• Connectivity & workflow: Ethernet, WiFi, print management software, remote job submission, colour calibration tools.
• Cost of ink & maintenance: Running cost is significant in wide format; ink, media, maintenance kits, and consumables should be considered.

Benefits Over Other Methods

• More economical for short-run and custom prints vs screen printing, especially when needing multiple designs.
• Faster turnaround for large or custom artwork without tooling or setup costs.
• More flexibility in media types (vinyl, fabric, paper, rigid boards) using a single device.

Considerations for Southern Africa Markets

• Climate and UV exposure are high – choose durable inks and media that resist fading.
• Availability of media rolls (vinyl, banner fabrics, backlit film) locally – check stock to avoid delays.
• After-sales support and spare parts for wide format machines are essential given size and cost.
• Electricity stability and power requirements for large printers should be considered, as some require higher voltage or stable power supply.
• Shipping, installation, and servicing costs are more significant for printers of this scale. Budget accordingly.

Conclusion

Wide format printers are powerful tools for businesses and creative professionals who need output beyond standard printer sizes. Their ability to print vibrant, large-scale graphics, maps, signage and fine art make them indispensable in advertising, architecture, retail, and design. For buyers in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, selecting the right printer means balancing print quality, media options, ink durability and service support to ensure long-term value.
