Discs: CD

What is a Compact Disc (CD)?

The Compact Disc (CD) is a digital optical disc storage format co-developed by Philips and Sony and introduced in the early 1980s. Initially used for audio recordings (CD-DA), it was later adapted for data storage in the CD-ROM format, enabling computers to read discs filled with software, files, and multimedia content.

Formats: CD-R and CD-RW

• CD-R (Write-Once): Allows users to burn (record) data one time. Once written, data cannot be overwritten, making it useful for permanent backups, audio, or software distribution.
• CD-RW (ReWritable): Allows data to be erased and rewritten multiple times. Useful for temporary storage, testing, or reusable archival tasks. Introduced in the 1990s.

Physical Sizes and Capacities

• Standard disc (≈ 120 mm): generally holds about 650-700MB of data or 74-80 minutes of standard audio.
• Mini CD (≈ 80 mm): smaller size, used for singles, device drivers, or small data files; capacity roughly 185-210MB.
• Special shapes (business card-style or novelty shapes): limited capacity depending on shape, often under 100-200MB. Not as widely supported on all drives.

Speed Ratings and Compatibility

• Speeds are expressed in “x” units. For example, “1x” is the base speed (about 150 KB/s), while higher multiples increase write or read speed accordingly.
• CD-R media usually supports higher burn speeds; CD-RW media has more limitations due to the rewritable layer material. Older drives may not support the highest speed CD-RW discs.
• Some drives use techniques like Constant Linear Velocity (CLV), Zoned CLV, or CAV to manage disc rotation and data density for reliability across the disc’s surface.

Common CD Variants & Derived Formats

• CD-DA (Red Book): Standard audio CD format used for music.{index=9}
• CD-ROM: Read-only data format used to distribute software, audio, or multimedia.
• Enhanced Music CD / CD-Extra: Combines audio and data in one disc, so you get music that plays on regular players plus extra data content for computers.
• Multimedia & Video CDs (VCD, SVCD): Formats that store video content on CDs, though video quality is lower than DVD or Blu-ray. Still in use in some regions.

Why Use CDs Today?

• Good for audio playback in older car stereos or home CD players.
• Archival backup of documents, photos, music with offline security.
• Software or firmware distribution where download is not feasible or trusted.
• Affordable media cost, especially for small batches or replacements. Useful in South Africa, Zimbabwe & Namibia where internet bandwidth may be limited or data costly.

Buying Tips for South Africa, Zimbabwe & Namibia

• Ensure compatibility: check that your CD drive or burner supports CD-R and/or CD-RW at the speed you want.
• Buy from reputable suppliers to avoid poor quality blanks which may fail early or degrade over time.
• Choose media with clear labeling (speed rating, writable vs rewritable) to avoid unexpected issues.
• Consider batch testing: blank disc reliability varies; test first before using for critical storage or large quantities.
• Store discs properly: cool, dry place, avoid direct sunlight; use proper disc cases to avoid scratches or warping over time.

Conclusion

Compact Discs, CD-R, CD-RW remain useful and affordable optical storage solutions in Southern Africa. Whether for audio, backups, data distribution or legacy use, these formats offer proven reliability. For best value, choose good-quality discs, check speed and compatibility, and store them with care.
