Some CCTV cameras have changeable lenses. The lenses allows you to change the viewable angle, and area of focus. You need to decide whether a wide angle security camera lens or a narrow angle lens is most suitable in your situation. The CCTV camera varifocal lens allows you to adjust the focal length for your specific needs, which is also typically more expensive than security cameras fixed lens. Focal Length (in mm) The security cameras with wide angle lens work best for large-area places such as parking lots, back yards, warehouses, construction sites. The narrow angle lens cameras are ideal for entrances, doorways, hallways, cash registers. Aperture (f-stops) You can control how much of a scene is in focus by adjusting the security camera lens aperture. A wide aperture will make objects in front of you well focused but the background blurry. Whereas a small aperture will lead to everything captured in focus. Iris The iris controls how much light comes through the lenses’ aperture. When the iris creates a large opening, more light can pass through. The Lens' iris is selected to prevent images from being washed, or from being too dark. An auto iris lens, can automatically adjust light changes and is more ideal for outdoor locations where there are light variations. What is a wide angle security camera lens?

The advantage of narrow angle lenses is the amount of detail in the image is superior, which makes it easier to differentiate facial features, number plate numbers and other high definition details. The definition of "Wide angle" varies by manufacturer specifications, but they are usually anything from 48degrees to 180degrees (ultra wide angle). Ultra wide angles are between 170 degrees to 180 degrees and covers almost the entire front section from edge to edge of the camera. Ultra wide angles are best for large areas such as gardens and car parks. Ultra wide 360 degrees panoramic cameras are ceiling mounted and usually have a "fish eye" lens to allow such a wide area. These cameras are ideal in offices, warehouses and stores which require "an eye in the sky".
