USB hubs allows more than one device to be connected to a single USB port.

A user is able to extend the USB bus to connect many different types of devices in any combination. Hubs can also be connected to each other to extend the number of ports further.

USB hubs may also be used to extend the distance between the computer or laptop and the device, for example:

• Increase the distance between a computer and a USB mouse or USB keyboard
• Increase the distance between a laptop and mouse
• Increase the distance between a computer or laptop and a USB printer
• Increase the distance between a computer or laptop and a document scanner

USB Speeds:

• USB1.0 had 2 data rates: 12 Mbit/s data rate was intended for higher-speed devices such as external disk drives, and the lower 1.5 Mbit/s rate for low data rate devices such as joysticks
• USB2.0 has a data rate of 480 Mbit/s for all devices
• USB3.0  (published on 12 November 2008) has a data rate of up to 5 Gbit/s and is backward compatible to USB2.0. The USB3.0 cable differs from USB2.0 cables.
