Computer cooling, fans and heatsinks

Effective cooling protects your hardware, improves performance and keeps noise down. This top category explains the main cooling options available in South Africa and how to choose them. All guidance is brand neutral and focused on practical, evergreen advice.

Cooling: CPU Processor

The CPU is a primary heat source. Keeping it cool improves stability, extends lifespan and reduces fan noise. There are three common approaches.

  • Air coolers: Heatsink plus fan. Styles include tower coolers that blow air toward a rear exhaust and top-down coolers that also wash airflow over nearby motherboard components. Check cooler height, RAM clearance and case width.
  •
  • Liquid coolers (AIO): Pump and block on the CPU, hoses to a radiator with fans. Common radiator sizes are 120 mm, 240 mm, 280 mm and 360 mm. They move heat to the case edge, which can lower internal temperatures and noise under load.
  •
  • Passive coolers: Large fin stacks with no fan for very low power systems where silence is the priority. Ensure strong case airflow if used.

Key specs: TDP support, radiator or heatsink size, fan size and type, noise rating, socket compatibility, and included thermal paste.

Tips for SA buyers: Measure first, match cooler capacity to your CPU power and local ambient temperatures, and keep case airflow balanced to feed the CPU cooler with fresh air.

Cooling: Hard drive

Drives benefit from moderate, consistent airflow. Cooling helps prevent thermal throttling on fast SSDs and maintains reliability for HDDs.

  • M.2 SSD heatsinks: Low profile finned heat spreaders with thermal pads for NVMe drives. Reduce throttling during sustained transfers. Many motherboards include M.2 shields that perform a similar function.
  •
  • 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch drive coolers: Bay frames with one or two small fans move air across the drive body and controller board. Useful in cramped cages or warm rooms.
  •
  • Fanless HDD heatsinks: Aluminum or copper frames that conduct heat away from the drive while adding vibration damping for quieter systems.
  •
  • PCI slot exhaust and system ventilators: Pull warm air away from drive areas and improve overall case flow.

Tip: Avoid obstructing airflow with cables. Use the right thermal pad thickness for M.2 so the heatsink touches the controller and memory packages evenly.

Cooling: Memory / VGA

Graphics cards and memory modules can run hot during long gaming or creation sessions. Targeted cooling keeps clocks stable and reduces noise.

  • VGA coolers and spot fans: Small bracketed fans or slot ventilators that direct air toward the graphics card to reduce hotspot temperatures and help case exhaust work more efficiently.
  •
  • RAM heatsinks and memory coolers: Clip-on or adhesive heat spreaders for DIMMs, sometimes paired with a quiet fan bar. Helpful for high speed or overclocked memory to maintain stability.
  •
  • VRAM pads: High conductivity thermal pads improve contact between graphics card memory and existing heatsinks for better heat transfer.

Clearance check: Ensure add-on coolers do not interfere with tall RAM, front radiators or adjacent PCIe slots.

Cooling: Motherboard

Power delivery parts such as VRMs and MOSFETs, plus the chipset, also generate heat. Targeted heatsinks and guided airflow improve stability under boost and overclocking.

  • VRM and MOSFET heatsinks: Low profile, upright or slanted fin blocks attach to regulator areas and spread heat into case airflow.
  •
  • Chipset coolers: Passive fin stacks, with optional small fans for compact cases or multi GPU builds.
  •
  • Thermal pads and hardware: Use appropriate pad thickness so heatsinks sit flat. Spring screws or clips keep even pressure without bending the PCB.
  •
  • Directed airflow: Adjustable spot fans or a PCI exhaust can remove heat from dense motherboard zones.

Cooling: PC Case fans

Case fans move fresh air in and hot air out. Balanced airflow lowers temperatures for every component.

  • Common sizes: 80 mm, 92 mm, 120 mm, 140 mm, and 200 mm. Larger fans move similar air at lower RPM and are usually quieter.
  •
  • Airflow vs static pressure: Airflow fans suit open intakes and exhausts. Static pressure fans push air through radiators and tight grills.
  •
  • 3 pin DC vs 4 pin PWM: PWM allows precise speed control for lower noise. Many boards support both.
  •
  • Placement basics: Front and bottom intake, rear and top exhaust. Use dust filters on intakes and keep them clean.
  •
  • Pressure balance: Slight positive pressure helps reduce dust buildup inside the case.

Cooling: Water cooling

Liquid cooling moves heat to a radiator where large fans can remove it efficiently. It can be quieter at load and offers strong thermal headroom.

  • All in one liquid coolers: Pre filled, sealed units that are simple to install. Choose radiator size that fits your case and performance target.
  •
  • Custom loops: Pump, reservoir, tubing, blocks and radiators tailored to your system. Can cool CPU, GPU and other parts in one loop. Requires planning and periodic maintenance.
  •
  • Radiator fitment: Typical mounts support 120 mm, 240 mm, 280 mm and 360 mm. Ensure clearance for hoses, top panels and tall RAM or VRM heatsinks.
  •
  • Coolant care: Use approved coolants. Inspect fittings and tubing occasionally and keep radiators and filters free of dust.

General best practices

  • Plan intake and exhaust so cool air reaches heat sources and hot air leaves quickly.
  •
  • Use quality thermal paste and apply a thin, even layer on the CPU. Replace it during major service.
  •
  • Tidy cables to reduce airflow blockages. Fit dust filters on intakes and clean them regularly.
  •
  • Monitor temperatures and fan curves. Adjust for a balance of cooling and low noise that suits South African ambient conditions.

Outcome: With the right mix of CPU cooling, case fans, targeted heatsinks and optional liquid cooling, your PC will run cooler, quieter and more reliably for years to come.
